Kat

When I step into the living room after my little nap in the bath, Rayne is in the plush chair reading a book, one ankle crossed over his opposite knee. His eyes lift to meet mine as his appreciative gaze runs up and down the length of me. “Feel better, darling?”

My cheeks warm as I run a hand through my wet hair. “Yeah, actually. My muscles feel like putty, all warm and gooey.” I laugh and point to the steps. “I think I’m gonna go lay down for a while, if that’s okay.”

“Of course.” He closes the book and stands. “I’ll be down here if you need me.”

I turn toward the steps and force my loose muscles to work. “Alright, then. I’ll see you later.” I start up the steps but stop when his hand falls to my wrist.

“Kat, wait.” I turn and face him. “Thank you.”

“For…?”

“For giving me a chance. A month—to win you over.”

I force an even expression though my stomach feels a bit queasy. “You don’t need to thank me, Rayne. It’s the least I can do for you after all you’ve done for me.”

He looks like he wants to say more, but instead, he lifts my hand and presses a kiss to the inside of my wrist. “Mmm, so sweet,” he murmurs against my skin, sending a prickle of awareness with it. His searing touch makes my stomach tumble.

Meeting my eyes again, he comes around the banister and steps just high enough for his face to meet mine. He searches my eyes like he’s trying to read my thoughts when he slowly leans in. His breath warms my lips, and they part almost instinctively. He kisses me soft and slow at first, and something about the way he smells, the way his hair brushes my cheek, feels familiar, intimate. But when he presses close to me, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me closer, the familiarity wears off.

I break the kiss and press shaky fingers to my lips. Without a word, he backs away with a smirk on his lips and heads for the kitchen, leaving me all sorts of unsettled.

Part of me enjoyed our kiss, but another part wonders if maybe a month won’t be long enough to catch deeper feelings for Rayne.
